ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Eastern medicine that involves the use of very fine needles that are inserted just below the skin at strategic points in the body known as 'acupuncture points'. This is believed to help regulate the body's flow of energy (Qi) in order to restore, promote and maintain good health.

There is extensive research on the effectiveness of acupuncture for a wide range of conditions. Currently, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends acupuncture for the management of chronic pain (see NICE guideline published on April 2021).

You can refer to individual factsheets published by the British Acupuncture Council to find out the evidence on the use of acupuncture for the treatment of specific conditions.
